The Green Schools Committee in Scoil na gCailini is a very active one. To become involved each girl must present her reasons why she would like to be on this committee and she is then nominated and voted by her class members based on this presentation. To date there are four green flags flying high at Scoil na gCailini. The first for Litter and Waste reduction (Recycling) , the 2nd was for Energy Reduction and overall spend, the 3rd was for Water Reduction, the 4th for Travel and each of these flags have to be maintained on an annual basis in order to proceed in the programme. This is a fantastic achievement for Scoil na gCailini and is testament to the hard work and dedication of the Green Schools Committees over the past number of years and indeed to Mrs Duffy who guides, advises and oversees the meetings.
The girls take part in WOW (Walk on Wednesday) every week. They carpool, walk and stride or walk to school if at all possible. There is also SOW ( Scoot on Wednesday) where they can bring their scooters and flickers to school and under supervision use these at breaktimes. The Green Schools Committee conduct a survey every Wednesday on how the girls come/ travel to school. Based on the results of this survey , the ‘greenest’ class receives the GOLDEN BOOT award.
A new Green Schools Committee has been formed for this year and these girls are eager to get involved in projects on Biodiversity – which will hopefully culminate in a 5th Green Flag for the school.
